About the Center

An NABH-accrediated center, Somatheeram Ayurveda Village sits directly on the Kovalam beach in the quiet village of Chowara, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

Founded in 1985 by entrepreneur Mr Baby Mathew, Somatheeram Ayurveda Village led the way in transforming the global perception of Ayurveda by creating the world's first resort dedicated exclusively to authentic Ayurvedic healing. His vision was simple yet revolutionary - to offer guests the authenticity of a traditional Ayurvedic hospital in a holiday retreat. Today, that vision has grown into a group of five deluxe Ayurveda resorts across Kerala, along with a fleet of houseboats on Kerala's backwaters.

Somatheeram incorporates sustainability into its everyday operations. From their traditional Kerala architecture, medicinal gardens, locally sourced ingredients and environmentally conscious practices, the resort tries to preserve Kerala's natural heritage while supporting authentic Ayurvedic healing.

Rooms, dining and treatment spaces reflect the timeless of Kerala's architectural heritage while overlooking Chowara Beach, creating a serene environment for healing. Guest’s can also experience traditional Kerala folk dance, classical theatre, sitar and tabla concerts, plus additionally curated excursions* to temples, palaces, backwaters and heritage sites through the resort's Travel Assistant, giving them a cultural insight and understanding of the beautiful state of Kerala.

All excursions and trips must be approved by the treating therapist beforehand, to ensure they don't interfere with the treatment program.

Food

The Ayurvedic menu, designed to be compatible with the various doshas/ body types, was developed by the in-house team of doctor’s based on research into classical Ayurvedic texts and various treatment plans, Guests are strongly encouraged to follow it to ensure the full benefit of their program.

The Panchakarma program, in particular, demand strict restrictions during the duration of the treatment and meals will be advised in consult with the doctor. The in-house dietitian monitors meals for every guest at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For guest’s interested in learning the principles behind the food, Somatheeram runs two weekly Ayurveda cooking demonstration classes, led by its Ayurveda specialty chef.

Rooms

Accommodation at Somatheeram is designed to complement the guest’s healing journey. The resort’s traditional Kerala architecture, sea views and tropical gardens create peaceful spaces where guests can rest, recover and reconnect with nature. The rooms are equally functional and include Wi-Fi, an in-room locker, double bed, telephone, western-style bathroom and hot water facility.

Packages at Somatheeram Ayurveda Village are all-inclusive and includes doctors consultations and examinations, daily treatments, medicines, Ayurvedic full board, yoga and meditation and accommodation. Every guest begins their treatment process with a detailed consultation by an Ayurvedic physician who assesses their Prakriti (constitution), Dosha imbalance, lifestyle and medical history. Based on this, a personalized treatment programme is created combining therapies, herbal medicines, diet, yoga and meditation. Rather than treating symptoms alone, the focus is always on restoring balance and providing long-term lifestyle guidance to guests’.

As an NABH-certified Ayurveda hospital, medical reimbursement through various Health Insurance is available for Ayurvedic medical care taken at Somatheeram Ayurveda Group Hospitals. Please check directly with your insurer before booking to confirm coverage specifics. Cashless insurance is not available at the resort, so guest’s will need to pay upfront and file for reimbursement afterward.
