about center
Set in the tranquil backwaters of Lake Vembanad, Amal Tamara is a registered Ayurveda hospital, accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH). Founded by the Shibulal family , the visionaries behind Tamara Leisure Experiences and heirs to a line of Ayurvedic practitioners dating back to the 1920 - Amal Tamara carries forward a century of healing therapies and wisdom, offered here with the warmth and care of five-star hospitality.
The property is a compact 3.5-acre space with two main buildings - the Padippura near the entrance and the Nalukettu further inside. The Padippura houses guest rooms, the housekeeping station, consultation rooms, and treatment rooms, along with a central foyer called Yogapeedam used for yoga, meditation, and cultural programmes, while the Nalukettu is built in the traditional style of a Kerala home and contains the reception, lounge, kitchen, and dining hall. Interestingly, the buildings face west with an elegant façade overlooking manicured gardens, but the east-facing rear takes in views of the placid Vembanad backwaters — a reversal the visiting blogger found unusually striking.
Amal Tamara prides itself as a Ayurvedic sanctuary, where medicine and healing become a way of life. This commitment is reflected in the four key pillars of the Amal approach. At its core is authentic Kerala Ayurveda, delivered by qualified physicians and supported by GMP-certified in-house preparation of herbal medicines. Complementing this is Cure Cuisine, a personalized, organic, vegetarian wellness diet that excludes refined sugar, refined flour, preservatives, and sea salt.
Equal emphasis is placed on mind-body-spirit balance, nurtured through daily yoga, guided meditation, and immersion in local, cultural experiences. Amal Tamara is also committed to building long-term partnerships with guests, extending care beyond the stay itself through pre-arrival planning and post-departure follow-up consultations.
Food
“Pathye sathi gatharthasya kim Oushadha nishevanam”
When a diet is correct, there is no need for medicine
–From the Vaidya Jeevanam
This ayurvedic approach is central to Amal Tamara’s focus on well-being. The Ayurvedic menu is built on the fundamentals of Ayurvedic cooking, which focus on supporting healthy absorption, assimilation and elimination.
"Cure Cuisine" at Amal Tamara is the resort’s personalized, purely vegetarian wellness menu designed by Ayurvedic doctors and chefs to function as medicine in itself. Each guest is first guided by a physician in choosing the right diet for their needs, after which the expert chef crafts a personalized wellness menu tailored to their unique body type, health condition and treatment plan.
Only food that is easy to digest and easy to absorb, made using organic ingredients are served here. All the recipes are free from sea salt, refined sugar, preservatives and refined flour. Fresh, nutritious and delicious, the meals at Amal Tamara is at the heart of every treatment plan.
Other Facilities
Guests at Amal Tamara can also explore Kashayapura, an in-house Ayurvedic apothecary where they can observe or take part in the preparation of herbal medicines, while the Yoga Peedam offers a dedicated space for yoga and meditation and serves as the site of the daily Agnihotram ritual.

The resort also reflects the Tamara group's commitment to responsible hospitality through numerous eco-conscious touches - from coir laundry bags, seed-embedded paper pens, lead-free pottery, chemical-free washing, naturally dyed bathrobes and wooden toothbrushes and combs in place of plastic alternatives. This is paired with social responsibility, sourcing coir products from local manufacturers, pens from a differently-abled local artist, and ceramics from a nearby Tamil Nadu pottery.
